Winter in southern Portugal offers riders an unexpected opportunity to escape the cold and enjoy sunny days on the road. This tour will offer the best of Alentejo and Algarve, the two regions of the country that are usually much busier and more crowded in the summer.

Lisbon - Zambujeira do Mar

We leave magically enlightened Lisbon, once the capital city of the world, and ride south towards the Serra da Arrábida and its incredible views of the ocean below. In Setúbal, we take the ferryboat to cross the Sado River to start our ride alongside the Vicentina coast, with plenty of small and cozy villages on our way.

The coast on the western side of Portugal is full of surprises, and many consider it as beautiful, if not even more, than the world-famous Algarve on the south. Our stop for the day will be at a quiet and tranquil ‘herdade’ nearby the sea, where a delicious dinner and a good night’s rest are waiting us.

Zambujeira do Mar - Monchique

Be prepared to enjoy magnificent coastal views as we ride along the Costa Vicentina and visit some of its splendid beaches. We’ll keep going south until we reach Sagres, at the country’s southwestern tip. This historic site is known for the Fortaleza de Sagres, a 15th-century fortress home to a famous naval school. An important center for maritime exploration and training, it played a crucial role in Portugal’s Age of Discovery, when sailors learned how to explore and map new territories worldwide.

After lunch, we turn inland to ride through Serra de Monchique, zigzagging through incredible mountain twisties until we reach our destination for today, the charmimg town of Monchique.

Monchique - Praia Verde

After our peaceful night in the Serra de Monchique, we leave the curvy roads to find ourselves back close to the sea. A short stretch of highway will allow us to avoid the busiest urban centers near the sea, and the day will be spent visiting fascinating beaches and small towns while we taste some local seafood specialties on stops along the way.

The Algarve can be overwhelming during the summer due to the high influx of tourists looking for lazy days in the sun. However, getting there in the winter means having a much more relaxed experience in this southern corner of Portugal. We’ll finish our day at Praia Verde, close to the Spanish border, enjoying a fantastic hotel within walking distance from the ocean.

Praia Verde - Almodovar

We now say goodbye to the coast and start our way up north and then west, crossing a less-known but utterly beautiful area of the Algarve. The ride will take us on nice curves to Cachopo and then Silves before we turn northeast after lunch.

In the afternoon, more twisties as we reach the National Park of Herdade da Parra and press on to our destination for today, Almodavar, already in the Baixo Alentejo region. With narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses and traditional architecture, the town is a perfect place to have a local ‘alentejano’ delicious dinner.

Almodovar - Evora

We leave Almodovar to ride east, close to the Spanish border, and turn north to move alongside the Guadiana River, passing by Alcoutim and Mértola. For lunch, a stop in Monsaraz, a sensational medieval hilltop town with one of the most stunning castles in Portugal.

Alentejo is s a poster region likened to Tuscany or Provence, full of wheat fields, cork oak forests, and wildflower meadows. We’ll ride through timeless villages to reach Évora, another lovely medieval town with much to offer in terms of culture and gastronomy. Our hotel inside the walled city will be a perfect starting point for a relaxed walk on Évora’s old narrow streets.

Evora - Lisbon

It’s our final day on the road, but there’s still much to be seen and felt before we return our bikes to Lisbon. A stretch of fast highways will allow us enough time to explore the surroundings of Portugal’s capital city. We’ll pass through the green landscape of Parque Nacional de Sintra-Cascais and enjoy breathtaking views of the cliffs at Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of Europe.

Next follows a delightful road embracing the mountains down to the fishermen’s cozy town of Cascais and a sublime ride alongside the coast back to Lisbon. The final night of our trip will be dedicated to the memories Portugal will have left on us all as we make a toast to new friends and new adventures!
