Los Angeles

Reception of the participants at the airport and transfer to the hotel by Hertz Ride staff, welcome drink, dinner and tour presentation.

Los Angeles - San Luis Obispo

For this first day of our trip, we head out of town along the famous Pacific Coast Highway (CA 1) via Malibu to the town of Santa Barbara, known for its Spanish Renaissance architecture. Next, we wind up over the San Marcos Pass to the wine country of Santa Ynez and Los Olivos to Solvang, founded in the 19th century by Danish settlers and built as a piece of Denmark transplanted.

We continue west through the flower fields of Lompoc Valley, stopping to visit Mission La Purísima Concepción—one of California's 21 missions built two centuries ago. We then snake north to the small resort town of San Luis Obispo to end our day.

San Luis Obispo - Carmel

Enjoy fantastic ocean vistas and the superlative twisting coast highway as we ride the world-famous Big Sur coastline today. We begin our coast ride at Morro Bay, then head north via San Simeon State Park (and perhaps a visit to Hearst Castle, the fantasy castle-home of media tycoon William R. Hearst).

We'll stop at Piedras Blancas Beach to view the elephant seals hauled on the sands, and we then charge to the coiling Pacific Coast Highway as it twines through Big Sur, with its Redwood trees towering over the crashing ocean below. This is one of the world's most sensational drives, with its cliff-top switchbacks and stunning vistas, highlighted by our ride across Bixby Bridge. We arrive in the fairytale village of Carmel-by-the-Sea, with its many art galleries and fine-dining restaurants for our night stop.

Carmel - San Francisco

Today begins with a short ride north to Monterey, a seaside city with a beautiful bay setting. Founded by the Spanish in 1770, it served as California's capital under Spanish and Mexican rule and later became an important fishing port. We'll stop to explore the world-class Monterey Bay Aquarium and walk through Fisherman's Wharf.

We then head inland on CA68 to Salinas, stopping en route at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for a pace-car led round of the track, and ride along the San Juan Grade Road over the coastal mountains for lunch in historic San Juan Bautista.  In the afternoon, ride through the San Juan Valley via Watsonville to Santa Cruz—a surf-crazy university town—then follow the Pacific Coast Highway past Año Nuevo State Park (more elephant seals!) to Half Moon Bay, ending the day in San Francisco.

San Francisco

Full day at leisure to enjoy the ‘City by the Bay’ at your own pace.

San Francisco - Calistoga

Today we savor the Northern California coastline, combing sublime vistas, soaring old-growth redwoods, and windswept beaches as we follow the cliff-hanger Shoreline Highway (SR1). We begin by crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, then via the picturesque bayside town of Sausalito, to coil up the mountains to Muir Woods and drop down to Muir Beach. At Olema, we turn west through Point Reyes National Seashore to visit the lighthouse atop the wind-battered Point Reyes Headland. Returning to Olema, we twist inland via Petaluma to Sonoma, a charming historic town with an 18th-century Spanish mission and military barracks in the heart of wine country.

Then on to Napa and the world-famous Napa Valley, birthplace to some of the best North American wines. We'll ride north through the valley to Calistoga and a late-afternoon visit—once the bikes are safely parked! —at Sterling Vineyards.

Calistoga - Garberville

We will ride through the Anderson Valley (known for its orchards) to Healdsburg, then follow the Russian River as it coils west to the Pacific Ocean at Jenner. We'll then follow the dramatically beautiful shoreline north to via Gualala and Elk to Mendocino for lunch in this quaint town, full of gingerbread clapboard homes, poised on a peninsula surrounded by the Pacific Ocean.

In the afternoon, we continue north via the lumbering capital of Fort Bragg and along the course of the Eel River to Leggett, where we begin our ride along the 'Redwood Highway.' Passing through Richardson Grove State Park, we end this beautiful day in Garberville, a lovely little town—notorious as the "marijuana capital of California"—in the heart of the Redwood country.

Garberville - Lake Almanor

You'll be awed today as we ride along SR 101 beneath the soaring redwoods of Humboldt Redwoods State Park. We turn east onto SR 36 and follow the course of the Van Duzen River over the Coast Mountain Range via Forest Glen to Red Bluff, at the northern extreme of California's Central Valley. Ahead, the snow-capped conical peak of Mt. Lassen awaits as SR 36 climbs, snaking into Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Lake Almanor - Lake Tahoe

Today we ride SR 89 south through the Sierra Nevada Mountains via Gleneagle and Truckee to Lake Tahoe, the jewel in the crown of the High Sierra and California's most beautiful body of water. Its crystal-clear water ranges from emerald to sapphire. We'll follow SR 28 along the western shore via Sugar Pine Point State Park and Emerald Bay (stunning vistas from here!) to South Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe - Groveland

We will start at SR 88 for the quaint hamlet of Volcano to McLaughlin's Daffodil Hill where in spring, the hillside is carpeted with daffodils. We then continue downhill to Sutter Creek, a California Gold Rush town, and turn south on fabled SR 49 along the rolling foothills of Gold Country. This stunningly beautiful route winds through a series of historic small towns that recall the 1848 California Gold Rush that birthed them.

Beyond Angels Camp, we reach Columbia State Historic Park—a perfectly-preserved Gold Rush town complete with a stagecoach, gold-panning exhibit, and blacksmith's forge. We then continue to Sonora and Jamestown—another wonderfully preserved gold era town. There, the Railtown 1897 State Historic Park displays antique steam trains and has a still-functioning Sierra Railway. At Mocassin, we follow SR 120 at it coils steeply up to Groveland, the gateway to Yosemite National Park.

Groveland - Big Pine

Today offers some of the most sensational ridings of the tour as we ascend into Yosemite National Park. We'll descend into Yosemite Valley, with free time for hiking. After lunch in the valley, we'll retrace our route to SR 120 to cross over the Sierra Nevada. Prepare to be awed by the stunning high alpine scenery of Tuolumne Meadows and Tioga Pass. We drop down to Lee Vining, where we'll stroll among the eerie tuff cones of Mono Lake State Park.

From here, we'll ride south along SR 395 through the Owens Valley—a long rift valley between the Sierra Nevada and the White Mountains. This portion of the itinerary offers what may be the most dramatic scenery of the entire tour, with the snow-capped Sierras rising sheer from the valley. We end our day at Big Pine.

Big Pine - Los Angeles

We begin the day with an excursion high into the White Mountains and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, protecting the world's oldest living things (the tree called 'Methuselah' sprouted in 2832 BC!), which grow only here, at an elevation of above 3,000 meters. Returning to SR 395, we continue south via Lone Pine, with snow-capped Mt. Whitney—at 4,421 m, the tallest peak in the mainland USA—towering overhead to the west. Lone Pine is a gateway to the Mojave Desert.

We'll continue along SR 395 to Randsburg, a still-lived-in "ghost town" that looks the same as it did in its boom days after gold was discovered there in 1895. We follow through the heart of the desert via Mojave and Lancaster and into the refreshingly cool Angeles National Forest via Hidden Springs, arriving Los Angeles in the late afternoon.

Los Angeles - Los Angeles

It's time to enjoy a guided tour of the most picturesque neighborhoods and places, including Hollywood and Beverly Hills. LA is an amazing and vibrant city, capital of the movie industry, and some of the world's most famous beaches, like Santa Monica, Venice, and Malibu. Farewell dinner in a gourmet restaurant will close this fantastic experience on the US west coast, one of the most desirable places to ride in the world.
