Practical Information for Your Porto Rental

License Requirements

In Portugal, a Category A license is required for motorcycles over 35 kW (approx. 47 hp). European licenses are fully recognized. Visitors from outside the EU should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their national license. Minimum age and riding experience requirements vary by model.

Insurance

All rental motorcycles include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). We recommend adding Extra Coverages to reduce your financial exposure in the event of motorcycle damage. Extra coverage options can be added at booking or at pick-up.

Fuel

In Portugal, you'll fill up with Gasolina 95 (unleaded) or Super 98. Our entire fleet runs on petrol — no diesel bikes.

Pick-up and Return

Our station is located at Rua do Barreiro 492, Armazém A, Maia — easily accessible by car from the city centre and near the airport. Pick-up and return outside regular opening hours can be arranged. Online check-in saves time at the counter.

One-Way Rental

Want to start in Porto and return the motorcycle in Lisbon, Málaga or another Hertz Ride location? One-way rentals are available — just mention it when booking.

Best Motorcycle Routes from Porto

Porto sits at the edge of some of Portugal's most varied and rewarding riding territory. Whether you're planning a day trip or a multi-day motorcycle tour, these are the routes our team recommends most.

Douro Valley — The River Road

Follow the N108 east from Porto along the Douro River and within an hour you're deep inside one of the world's great wine landscapes. The road clings to the riverbank through steep, narrow gorges, past whitewashed quintas and terraced vineyards that cascade down to the water. This is Portugal's most iconic inland ride.

The legendary N222

Ride the legendary N222 in Portugal — one of Europe's most rewarding motorcycle routes. Stretching through the breathtaking Douro Valley, especially between Peso da Régua and Pinhão, this road combines flowing curves, smooth tarmac, and spectacular vineyard views above the Douro River. The N222 delivers the perfect balance of riding pleasure and scenery.

Coastal Route to Aveiro — Atlantic All the Way

Head south along the Atlantic coast on the N109 and enjoy an hour of open riding through beach towns, pine forests and long flat straights with the ocean always close. Aveiro — built on a network of canals and famous for its Art Nouveau architecture and moliceiro boats — is a perfect destination. Works equally well as a relaxed half-day or a full coastal loop.

Serra da Estrela — The High Mountain Route

For riders who want altitude and challenge, head east to Serra da Estrela — the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal. The roads climb through increasingly dramatic scenery, reaching the Torre summit at nearly 2,000 meters. The passes are technical and exposed, the views are extraordinary, and the descent back west feels like a reward earned.

Guimarães — Portugal's Birthplace

A smooth and satisfying ride takes you to Guimarães in under an hour — but the destination earns the journey. Known as the cradle of the Portuguese nation, Guimarães is a perfectly preserved medieval city: narrow stone streets, a hilltop castle, and a UNESCO-listed historic centre that feels genuinely untouched.

Peneda-Gerês National Park — The Wild North

Branch into the mountains on the N103 to reach Peneda-Gerês national park. The roads through the park are narrow, winding and completely surrounded by wilderness — granite moorland, ancient oak forests, cascading rivers and almost zero traffic. This is riding at its most elemental. One of the finest motorcycle routes in the entire Iberian Peninsula.
